DWELL on Design Recap (by Melissa)
To dwell (dwɛl) v. | To dwell on or upon, is to think, speak, or write about at length or with persistence: to linger over.
To Dwell on Design is being lured by pink, heart-shaped, chairs stamps on the floor all the way to Chairtopia. It’s being mesmerized by a rustically appointed camper van made for solitary living. It’s finding yourself entranced by a fantasy adventure novel written by Sprouting Sprocket Studio. And it’s being captured by a wonderfully hidden spring system that makes a seemingly hard wooden Sitskle-made deck chair feel more like a cushion.
When stepping through the large doors of the Los Angeles Convention Center, one may feel like Alice stepping into Wonderlans. That’s because the recent Dwell on Design LA trade show in June, brought with it a smorgasbord of the most current design ideas for residential and urban living. As I kept feeling the lure of the white rabbit, I could not help but be impressed by this beautifully curated show that was also educational, informational, experiential, and visually stunning.
Dwell on Design LA has now become the largest design event in the U.S. Curated by the editors of the Dwell on Design magazine, it spans three days and offers a steady stream of content from more than 200 top minds in the industry. Dwell’s unparalleled educational opportunities and more than 400 dynamic exhibitions all span 300,000 square feet.
Unlike other design shows, Dwell on Design LA also offers exciting programs, such as the “Home Tours” program, which offers a rare chance to step into local homes selected for their rich diversity of modern, livable yet innovative architecture and design. These visits are even followed up by a “Meet the Architects” night.
But of course, being LA, what’s an all-inclusive design trade show without showcasing the latest green automobiles with the “Green Car Ride & Drive” program. Full of hybrids, electric cars, advanced gas, clean diesel and more, this rabbit hole had now become the slipstream of the new nitrogen crossover. A green friendly car pitched to enter the California market this year, and another draw-card for attendees to talk about the show. It’s no wonder that Dwell on Design LA pulls in design luminaries from around the world.
And as the day unfolded, so did the realization of LA’s indelible imprint on design. Buzzwords like sustainability, eco-friendly, and renewable design technologies were commonplace.
If you can dream it, and that dream consistes of a better tomorrow, it is already being manufactured in LA. So it’s no wonder that LA has become a marksman on cutting-edge design. Dwell on Design LA reflected that with a bourgeoning design community contributing to forward-thinking technologies that marry aesthetic with the care of tomorrow.
After all, to dwell, is also to: “remain for a time.”
