IIS Creative Director Judges WebAwards 2011
Since 2006, I Imagine Studio Creative Director, Olga Weiss, has been a judge for The Web Marketing Association’s international WebAward Competition, which recognizes the best websites across 96 industries.
All entries are judged based on their design, innovation, content, technology, interactivity, copywriting and ease of use.
This year, Olga has recognized several website design and development trends among the top contenders:
- Mobile and portable device compatibility
With every year, this is becoming less of a trend and more of a necessity. Many internet users are choosing to access websites through portable devices. Instead of creating a mobile version of their site, many companies are building new models that are able to show standard websites within the mobile display.
- Social media integration
The way we use the Internet has changed. Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are becoming the hub for our online life, and many companies are blending the available platforms to create a unique web of content. While some sites offer Twitter updates on their pages, others allow you to share content from their site via Facebook.
HTML5 & CSS3 instead of Flash
Many designers are moving away from Flash towards the more advanced HTML5 and CSS3. Some advantages: HTML5 allows different multimedia content to be easily displayed without the hassle of plug-ins, and CSS3 features text shadows and advance border styles.
- Focus on user experience
There has been a major shift from creating purely aesthetic web pages to focusing on user experience, functionality, usability, user friendly navigation and shorter copy with charts, graphs, lists, maps, diagrams and animation replacing words.
- Scalable design
Today, screens come in all shapes and sizes, which means that websites are no longer viewed exclusively on computer monitors with the traditional 1024 x 768 screen resolution. Many successful websites are taking advantage of fluid widths, scalable images and adjustable layouts, which can be adapted to a variety of browser sizes.
The 2011 WebAward winners will be announced September 12th. Make sure to check out http://www.webaward.org/ for a full list of recipients.
