Landing a Creative Job 101: Minsky’s newest “Workshop” book
Painstaking hours, weeks or months of putting yourself out there for a job (any job, really) have become a regular part of the job process. In our VP of strategy Laurence Minsky’s newest book, The Get A Job Workshop, Frank Blossom of The Polishing Center puts it best, “It’s a job to get a job.”
Minsky’s newest book revolves around the ins and outs of the advertising and digital career world and delves into the secrets of landing a job in the ad and branding industry. The book is divided into the four steps to getting a job: Overview, The Creative Marketplace, Going to Market, and On The Job. The book, which reads like a mini-workshop on the job process, consists of multiple interviews with some of the top marketing agents in the industry, as well as their tips and tricks for up-and-coming advertisers.
In his book, Minsky devotes a whole chapter to the basics — that is, how to market yourself before you can start marketing for others. Minsky emphasizes the significance of job applicants’ online presence (O.P.) and the necessity of making it compatible with the career goals they’re seeking.
Minsky also discusses the importance of appropriateness when it comes to social media. For example, it’s critical to always screen your profile to ensure it’s job-appropriate. One big takeaway from the book is the increasing digital nature of the world we live in, and recognizing how vital it is to keep up. Social media is just one, albeit important, way for applicants to demonstrate their digital skills.
Using Social Media in Your Favor
More often than not, social media plays a large role in an agency’s character, and as Minsky points out, companies like to hire people similar to those already on staff. Matching up your profile to the profile of the company you are applying to and speaking to those connections during your job interview will undoubtedly make you a stronger candidate for the job.
