Using Social Media to Inspire & Be Inspired
Social media is a topic that’s been swirling around in our offices lately—especially its effects on professional businesses. We took a look at social strategy, focusing on ways to harness social media to engage customers and create ways inspire, as well as allowing ourselves to be inspired in return.
Pinterest and Instagram are emerging social media platforms already standing out from sites like Facebook and Twitter, which are well known, text-heavy platforms. Pinterest and Instagram answer the call of visual communicators, so we focused on those. Plus, as we well know: A picture is worth a thousand words.
These picture-intensive social media platforms perfect for design businesses and other creative companies, as they provide an outlet to share products in a unique and fun way. The key here is for businesses to remember that creativity should not end at your designs. A creative business is expected to also showcase its designs in a creative way.
One of the best ways we’ve seen this done was by Kate Spade. Spade recently put up a photo on their “ks_Saturday” account of a designer painting an abstract print that was later used on a skirt in Spade’s newest collection. Her Instagram followers love seeing the creative process, and many of them learned something new about her fashion line in the process. Giving your followers a behind-the-scenes look at your process is priceless.
Social media also provides a platform to engage with consumers in creative ways. Pantone, a worldwide authority on color and color palettes, regularly features pictures on their Instagram of photos their followers have put up with the #Pantone hashtag. One picture consisted of a black cup of coffee with the “Pantone Black C” color palette right next to it. This is a smart and creative way for a color company to strengthen its brand.
As social media becomes increasingly picture-oriented, businesses should take advantage of the trend to feature their products in creative, unique ways that set them apart from the competition. We at I Imagine have just begun and are already “insta-obsessed.”
