Poppycock Introduces its Upscale Cousin: In•dul•gence - Sumptuous, Sweet Snack with a Cause

The makers of Poppycock, that nostalgic popcorn and caramel snack that became so popular in the 60’s, is introducing a modernized, richer, upscale version called In•dul•gence – specifically designed to tempt and satisfy today’s woman.
And while the name In•dul•gence is aptly chosen – because it lets its buyer indulge that deepest intense desire for an exotic mid-afternoon or evening sweet snack – it allows the buyer to do so guilt-free. You see, for every box sold, a $1 contribution will be made to CARE, to help women in villages from Ecuador to Latin American and Africa, by funding* programs that help make them and their families self-sufficient.

"In talking with women over the last year and developing this product,” explains Cheryl Szego, Director of Marketing at Ubiquity Brands, “we found that women are constantly denying their own wants. More and more of us are feeling like we work really hard – at meeting the needs of our job, our family and friends. And why not enjoy a simple treat each day? That’s the void In•dul•gence fills.”

But In•dul•gence goes far, far beyond delivering extravagant, rich flavor.

As Cheryl notes, “Our contributions to CARE will help fund practical, life-enhancing
projects: to help women start an income-generating handicraft business; provide villages with access to clean water; help women grow crops with better nutritional value and protect those crops in drought or heavy rain; and enable young girls to stay in school – something that will ultimately create many new opportunities for each girl and have a lasting, positive impact on her whole family as well. So in essence, In•dul•gence lets us satisfy some basic taste cravings, and it helps us satisfy our innate desire to help others.”

 

Sumptuous Flavors
In•dul•gence debuts in five tempting flavors, and will be sold through grocery and convenience stores beginning March 1. It will retail for $3.99 for a 3.0-3.5 oz box. Each packet contains about 3 servings. Premium ingredients have been selected from all around the world (Belgian dark chocolate, English toffee, hazelnuts from Turkey, macadamia nuts from Kenya as well as pistachios, white chocolate fudge, aged honey, pumpkin seeds and more), and carefully blended to deliver distinct flavor sensations:

Simply Diva – Clusters of almonds, cashews and
pecans devilishly drizzled with caramel
Nights in White Chocolate – Honey coated clusters of
English toffee, sesame seeds, and whole roasted
pistachios drizzled with white chocolaty fudge
Chocolate Crush – Clusters of caramel mocha-coated
popcorn, hazelnuts and walnuts drizzled with creamy
milk chocolate
Belgian Love Affair – Clusters of almonds, pecans and
cashews drizzled with Belgian dark chocolate
Toast of the Town – Double glazed clusters of peanut
butter coated popcorn, macadamia nuts, almonds and
pecans drizzled with creamy milk chocolate

The Look
The dramatic black and jewel tone packaging, as well as the inspirational witticisms on the inside back panel, give In•dul•gence a distinct modern look designed to appeal especially to women. The “door” of the back panel opens to reveal a haunting and beautiful color shot of one of the women in a village that will benefit from CARE’s ongoing initiate to lift women and their families up out of poverty. Each In•dul•gence flavor features a personal, uplifting story. Four of the five women featured were photographed by the award-winning photojournalist Phil Borges.

A Trend?
“There are a lot of enticing facets to this product. It’s sassy, delectable, attractive, wise, and benevolent – a lot like today’s modern woman,” laughs Kris Malkoski, CMO of Ubiquity Brands, and Cheryl’s partner in the development and introduction of In•dul•gence.

“We are having a lot of fun as well as enjoying a great sense of accomplishment in premiering In•dul•gence. And this is just the tip of the iceberg,” she adds, with a gleam in her eye.

Ubiquity Brands is also developing upscale, indulgent salty snack products. In April, consumers will see “flavor-infused” tortilla chips which “blew consumers away” in product testing. “And, we’ve developed a low fat kettle chip that you can’t even tell has only a fraction of fat from the original recipe,” notes Kris.
