Jay’s Launches New Line of Mexican Snack Foods

Authentic Taste Designed to Appeal to Growing Mexican Population and Anyone who Loves Spicy Flavor and Crruunnnch

CHICAGO, IL, January 30, 2007

Jay’s Potato Chips, known for its slogan “Can’t Stop Eating ‘Em!” has introduced a new line of Mexican snack foods, which offer authentic taste and a unique blend of bold spicy flavors. “These are different than anything else available in the market,” stated Erik Rosenstrauch, Director of Marketing/Salty Snacks at Ubiquity Brands, Jay’s parent company. “We see this new line as a celebration of Mexican heritage and we wanted to create the flavors and products that Mexicans want to eat and enjoy.”

The new line includes seven unique flavors: Salsa Verde Tortilla Chips, Salsa Roja Tortilla Chips, Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips, Hot Stuff Corn Chips, Jalapeno Potato Chips, Hot Stuff Cheezlets and Salsa Verde Pork Skins. Suggested retail price is $.99 cents for individual snack bags; larger Share-the-Fun size bags of tortilla chips will cost $1.59; and the Hot Cheezlets, Hot Corn Chips and Jalapeno Potato Chips also come in Mini-Snack size bags for $.25. The packages are printed in English and Spanish; Jay’s Mexican is the first product line to print their bags in dual languages, and proudly display the Mexican flag colors on every bag.
Jay’s is very committed to creating a product that would appeal to the growing Mexican community in Chicago. They worked with their own Hispanic employees to identify people in the community who could provide input. Jay’s Director of Hispanic Distribution, Jesse Alvarez, is a member of a popular Mexican restaurant family, that helped to develop the bold, spicy flavors they know their customers love. His uncle, José Solis, one of the second generation owners of Taco Erendira, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, is proud of his family’s involvement with the new product line. “The flavors are full of life—spicy and memorable -- just like the energy you will find in the typical Mexican- American family. The flavors were taste tested in Mexican neighborhoods here in Chicago. We selected only the flavors that our neighbors gave exceptional marks.”

“Our Jalapeno Potato Chips have real jalapenos in them. Our Hot Stuff Cheezlets and Corn Chips really are picositos!” explained Rosenstrauch. “We kept working on these recipes because our taste testers told us to go back and make the products even more zesty and flavorful. We think we’ve really delivered flavors that are repleto de la vida – full of life!”

Jay’s Mexican Snacks will be widely available in Chicago, sold through select Walgreens, supermercados (including Tony’s, Pete’s and Jimenez Foods), carnicerias and other neighborhood markets where Mexican foods are sold.
